Happy Halloween

Halloween lasted a whole week for us.
Monday was a pumpkin carving party.

Wednesday we had a ward trunk or treat.

Friday we went to the National Ranching Heritage Museum to trick-or-treat
because they have their party from 4-7 PM. That's my kind of party.
We also visited Dad at the hospital while he was working on Halloween night.

Toothless, Rapunzel, and Tinkerbell.
Sure do love these kiddos.

Hazel is 6 Months Old

I blinked and Hazel is now six months old.
The last six months our family has changed for the better.

Hazel has bonded with every member of the family.
Maggie took the longest to warm up, but it's apparent that they will be good sisters
and share a bond that only sisters share.
Maggie loves to take care of Hazel and feeds her, plays with her, and loves to make her laugh.
Henry adores her and loves hugging her.
Henry and Maggie--especially Maggie--are quick to help make Hazel happy when I ask for help.
Hazel has always had a special connection with Dad.
She lights up when she seems him.
And, as the individual who spends the most time with her, we have naturally bonded
as we look and smile at each other throughout the day, all day, every day.

Hazel is a social bug and is constantly laughing and smiling when someone is around.
And there is usually someone close by.
She cries when nobody is near her side.

Hazel is eating rice cereal once a day,
learning to crawl,
sleeping well at night,
lacking daytime sleep (as she tries to keep up with her siblings),
playing with toys in her hands,
kissing our faces at every opportunity,
and nursing with an occasional bottle.

It is fun to watch Hazel learn the crawl.
She can successfully position herself and scoot her back legs forward.
Then she lunges forward and lands flat on her face.
Sometimes her head bonks the couches, which doesn't make her happy.
Whenever she gets in her crib, Hazel immediately goes into crawling mode.
Never mind that she can be tired beyond tired:
crib = crawl.
It makes it difficult for her to put herself to sleep when she does this
and so she rarely puts herself to sleep these days.

She longs to play with her siblings as she lays on the floor.
Hazel will laugh and get excited when the other two are running and playing near her.
She will be a good addition to the established sibling relationship between the older kids.
Hazel seems to be in between Henry's energetic, social personality and Maggie's content, quiet demeanor.

My favorite physical features are her Holmes eyes and her dimple on her right cheek.
I love the sound of her cute laugh, how ticklish she is, and her happy spirit.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: babies bring a special spirit with them.
Hazel has done just that.
Our home is filled with more love, happiness, and joy.
It is a truly a piece of heaven on earth.
As cliche as it sounds, I am sincere in each written word.

Known as Hazel,
 "Haze-o" (as pronounced by Maggie),
and Nugget (Dad's endearing name for her),
we all love her happy smiles, laughter, and excitement she displays when she greets us.
We love you Miss Hazel and are grateful that you love us, too.

Loving My Life

My cup runneth over lately.
It's a good phase of life.

Henry is sweet, kind, and helpful.
Maggie is in dress-up mode and throwing 3-year-old tantrums.
Hazel is practically perfect in every way.

I'm sleeping, exercising with friends (training for a half marathon),
enjoying a mostly unstructured life (aside from T/Th preschool),
and have a little bit of time with Brendon.
My heart is so full lately.

This is why...

Everyone loves Hazel.
Hazel loves everyone.
She makes all of us feel special, funny, and so loved.
We often say, "Hazel loves you!" or, "Hazel loves me!" to each other.

Henry and Maggie couldn't be any cuter.
They play together most of the time and in the same vicinity the rest of the time.
My heart bursts as I watch them together.

Does it get any cuter than this?

And we celebrated seven years together.
I love him and am so grateful for his dedication to God, his family, and his work.

Life is beautiful.

Swimming Lessons

Henry and Maggie had swimming lessons.
In the summer.
I put them in the same class, knowing the two would help each other.
Henry would help Maggie feel comfortable, less shy.
Maggie would help Henry be more brave in the water.
They are a perfect pair, these two.
Sometimes I wish they were twins.

I lied about Maggie's age to get her into swimming lessons.
(Is it less of a lie if I freely admit it?)
She was a champ.
She jumped off the diving board all by herself.
(She does a lot of things "all by myself." Always has.)
Maggie loved putting her face in the water.
She picked up on all the songs--she loves to sing--and would say everything verbatim:
"...splashes, splashes, we all fall down! Hold your breath!"
She is a good little swimmer.
And singer.

The last day of our lessons the girl had a major meltdown.
She is such a good girl, but she can be a big stinker sometimes.
The meltdown lasted so long I took pictures.
She came home, cried for another hour, then had a good nap.

This was Henry's second year in swimming lessons and he did a phenomenal job.
No crying or saying he didn't want to go swimming, like last year.
Henry decided he, too, would jump off the diving board all by himself...
after seeing Maggie do it.
He and Maggie would laugh and play together on the side of the pool while waiting for their turn.
He was a good companion for Maggie.
He is very cautious in the water (which I kind of appreciate), but loves to swim.
Especially with his puddle jumper.

Grandma Myrtice

Grandma Myrtice passed away August 31st.
She had a very sweet reunion on the other side of the veil:
parents, grandparents, her sweetheart, and baby boy.
It makes my heart warm to think about the joy she feels right now.

Grandma lived a full life.
She had seven children: six girls and one boy.
She has twelve grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
Family was her deepest joy.

We often joked about how all she wanted to do was be surrounded by family.
She loved the presence of her loved ones around her.

My memories of her are surrounded by all of our family.
She loved having all of us together, which allowed us to build relationships with each other.
I have so many family memories:
birthday parties, rodeos, big dinners, Thanksgiving meals, Pioneer Day, water balloon tosses, fruit ice, Easter hunts (with everyone getting the same number of prizes/treats), Christmas Eve, talent shows, Sunday dinners, Christmas visits, hugs and kisses at every "hello" and "good-bye"...

I remember listening to her sing, "I've Been Working on the Railroad."
I remember writing a poem in junior high about her loving and caring hands.
I remember her "Happy Birthday" phone calls, complete with, "...and many more..."

I remember, most recently, when she wanted to see me when I was visiting Utah.
She drove down with my aunts since I didn't have the time to go visit her.
I was always amazed that she cared so much to see me and to see and hold my children.

She was my piano teacher when I was in junior high.
Nicest teacher I ever had, so I knew I could get away with practicing a little less.
Bless her heart.

My favorite attribute of my grandma--already eluded to--was her anxious concern for her family.
She always knew what was going on in my life.
I'm confident she continues to be anxiously concerned about us.
She will now bless our lives from the other side.
She was and is a blessing to all of our family.

Gibson Family in California

In August, our family joined up with the Gibson clan in San Clemente, California for a vacation. But we made our one-week beach house vacation into a two-week vacation. We started with our typical Albuquerque pit stop with our dear friends, the Greenfields. Our first get-together was before we went to Missouri shortly after we were all married. We have shared a moving truck with them every step along our journey--we've always lived relatively close together. I'm pretty sure we've been the primary beneficiaries of our relationship with them and I'm convinced God had a hand in our friendship. Brendon even mentioned recently that it was a conversation with Ben that motivated him (Brendon) to interview in Missouri. We got married around the same time and have had three children close to the same age. Anyways, we love them. We stayed with them for one night and continued on our journey.

Our next stop was with my dear friend, Rachel. We were friends in high school and college and continue to call and catch up. It was so fun to see her and her cute family. Our children got along so well and it was fun to talk and talk and talk while the kids made messes and played to their hearts content. We enjoyed swimming in her pool and she almost convinced me that it *might* be a good idea to have a pool someday, but not really. She did convince me that it would be amazing to be neighbors, though. Now we just need her to move closer to me. If only.

After swimming, seeing Rio 2, playing, eating, and meeting up and Brendon's brother, Cody, who just moved to Arizona, we were off to California to see Grandma Sheryl. It's always a treat to go to grandma's house and she loves to spoil us with our favorite meals and is always a good playmate with our children. We were there one night and one morning, then we sped off to San Clemente.

We met up with my family at a beautiful beach house about a quarter mile or so from the beach. After exploring the house we walked down to the beach. Henry screamed with every wave that came in. Obviously he's not a California beach boy who sees waves very often. Maggie chimed in to be like her brother, squealing every ten seconds with the waves crashing. Brendon got his surf gear and went surfing with Austin at his first opportunity while the rest of us went back to the beach house.

We woke up early the next morning (although not as early as Brendon who went surfing nearly every morning before the break of dawn) to drive to Sea World. We had a lot of fun showing our kids all the fun animals and riding rides (who knew Sea World had roller coasters, kiddie rides, and Sesame Street characters to meet?). After Sea World we all went to dinner at my favorite Mexican restaurant that I don't know the name of. It's amazing and we all gorged and left happy.

We took it easy the following day with a day at the beach and the house. Grandma Sheryl came out to hang out with us and we loved having her there. Henry loved chasing the birds, the same way he did three years ago. He wasn't a fan of the water unless he had his floaties on. We screamed "tourists" at the beach with our kids in their puddle jumpers. But they loved it. Henry even went out in the waves on the surfboard with Dad. Maggie thought she wanted to do the same until she and Dad hit a couple of unpleasant waves. Tony had his first surfing lesson. The day at the beach was a success. Fun was had in the sand and water. That night we played Catch Phrase, one of my favorite games and we played and laughed and had so much fun.

We went to church the following day. Mind you we had been on vacation for awhile now. Maggie cried the whole meeting. It was not a fun day at church. We hung out at the house the rest of the day and celebrated Brooklyn's birthday. Favorite quote of the trip came from Brooklyn, who said in all sincerity, "It's so weird. I still feel like I'm six!" Love her.

The next day we went to the tide pools to see the animals. It was fun and the kids had fun with dad in the water. Afterwards we grabbed a bite to eat at an amazing sandwich place near the beach and headed back to Norco/Corona to visit Grandma Sheryl and Grandpa and Grandma Holmes, who we love so much. I was excited for our baby Hazel to meet Grandma Hazel. We had the complete Hazel Shirley photo with the two extraordinary women she is named after. Grandpa Holmes is the sweetest great-grandpa I've ever met who plays with his great-grandchildren. He's adorable. We ate dinner with the family and bathed our potty-training children in Grandma's tub before making our way back to the beach house.

Tuesday was Disneyland day. I was glad I had lots of extra hands to help with my children. We went on all the "must do's" on my list: Space Mountain, Star Wars, and Peter Pan. Henry's must do was Buzz Lightyear. I showed him the rides on the internet weeks before going to Disneyland and he still talks about that ride and how he "rode with Dad and killed the bad guy." My favorite was Henry on Splash Mountain. Little Maggie couldn't ride it and Henry excitedly came back and told her, "Maggie!!!! All the animals TALK on that ride! The birds! The fox! The bear!" I love that wants to share his excitement with her. Maggie was a mess the whole day with melt down after melt down. Fortunately, she was compliant with Grandma Sue on the toilet and even ended up falling asleep on her lap after Grandma tickled her back. Maggie loved seeing Minnie Mouse. Her mouth dropped open when she first saw her. She walked away from the park with princess flip flops (she's such a girly girl) and Henry with a Buzz Lightyear toy.

Sadly, the beach house part of our trip ended the following day, so we packed up. Before leaving San Clemente, our little family went shopping by the pier. At 10:00 am, Henry and Maggie were asleep in the stroller. They were exhausted. We had a successful shopping trip: we found a San Clemente ornament and bought a handful of much-needed t-shirts for Brendon. We returned back to Norco to visit Grandma Sheryl for one last day. We had fun with Jordan's family. Five of our six kids ran around and laughed and played to their hearts' content.

We headed over to Arizona to stay with Cassie. We were greeted with delicious hamburgers (I was just thinking about how good they were today) and played and talked and enjoyed their company for two nights.  We went to the park one day for a picnic meal while the kids played. I wish we could live by her, too.

We then made the 11-hour drive home in about 13 hours. It went really well. Hazel screamed in about every car ride except for the last day. We only had one long stop. We got a Little Cesar's pizza and played at the park. A pull-up on Maggie helped us complete the drive so quickly. All in all, it was a good drive.

The vacation was a special treat and we have never gone on such a long vacation. It was fun while it lasted and it was good to get home.
